Chronology of cameras Thornton Pickard
This SLR reflex camera is bulky and quite heavy. It has a leather covered mahogany body and uses 6 x 9 cm plates, with a film-pack offered as an option. The rear plate holder rotates for horizontal or vertical photos.
As the maximum speed of the curtain shutter reaches 1/1000th of a second, the manufacturer recommended it for sports reporting. The lens is interchangeable; by pivoting a hook the lens standard is released.
The lens is screwed onto a plate and is detached from the standard by hooks at the back. Telephoto lenses were offered. The entire lens holderhas vertical adjustment, by loosening a knob.
A lens cover covers the lens when not in use and when lifted it acts as a “lens hood”.
The hood of the viewfinder, made of fabric, has two rigid flaps which, when unfolded, keep it in the open position. It can be removed completely to access the ground glass screen. The image is projected onto the ground glass screen at the top of the camera, the focus adjusted by a dial on the side of the camera, which extends and retracts the fabric bellows.
The patent number, 6283.12, is written on a small plaque on the side.
It looks similar to the Thornton Pickard Ruby Junior Special and the Houghton Ensign Popular Reflex.
